Independent Forestry service offers many forest related services. We are buyers of standing timber. We do timber stand improvement, and assist land owners in the reforestation of their land. We help to establish new tree farms, and we will help to develop 5 year or 10 year timber management plans. We are members of the KFPA (Kansas Forest Products Association), the Kansas Chapter of the Walnut Council and the American Tree Farm Association.
Trees are America's only renewable resource. However the most desirable species are Walnut and Oak and they cannot renew if the canopy is closed with existing timber. Walnut and Oak are not shade tolerant, consequently a Walnut or Oak nut that sprouts in the timber will only exist until it's 3 or 4 feet tall and then will die out from lack of sunshine. In order to practice sustainable forestry the older mature trees that have things wrong with them or is on the creek bank and washed out need to be marketed and allow sunshine on the forest floor. Most all nut bering trees are not shade tolerant, consequently all of the regeneration in our timbers are undesirable species, such as Elm, Hackberry, Box Elder, and Mulberry.

The Walnut tree in the foreground, is to crowded, it has a Hackberry tree growing within three feet of it, that needs to be removed. Any tree that grows within 12 feet of the base of a Walnut tree or within 2 foot of the crown, is hendering the growth of the Walnut tree.

We buy all grades of Walnut logs. Most productive and desirable of the grades is veneer quality. Some trees can have 3 or 4 different grades of log in the same tree.
